Titel: Re: Kernspin

"That is for how one would couple spins. The "spin" to which you are referring is the total nuclear spin. And it is the coupling (again that term) of the spin we were talking about (intrinsic spin) and the angular momentum of the nucleons, symbolized with the letter l. So, s_1 coupled to l_1 gives us j_1, which is the total angular momentum sometimes referred as total nuclear spin. The coupling rules are exactly as before. Each nucleon has a particular j, and again they can couple between nucleons, giving us J. Take
7Li
: it has 4 neutrons coupled to J=0 and three protons. Two of them are coupled to J_12=0 and the remaining one has j_3=3/2 (because it is in the p_3/2 shell, if you are familiar with the nuclear shell model). It is this j_3 that defines the total nuclear spin of the nucleus, since J_12=0 coupled to j_3=3/2 can only be 3/2. (If you were to couple J_12=1 to j_3=3/2, for example, you would get possible values of 1/2,3/2, 5/2, from 1-3/2 to 1+3/2). "

7
Li auf 3/2 ?
6
Li hat ja einen Kernspin von 1.
Danke für die Hilfe.
